New Farm couple over the moon with purchase of historic Teneriffe coach house
DUCKING out of a nearby wedding has paid off for a New Farm couple who snagged a historic coach house in Teneriffe for $1.155 million yesterday.
Craig Lagerroth and partner Domenica Depasquale rushed from their friends’ wedding ceremony in New Farm to bid on 17 Teneriffe Drive at noon.
The three-bedroom house, which has been held by one family for about 100 years, retains many of the fixtures and features from the original build.
The pair, along with nine other bidders and about 100 onlookers watched on as auctioneer Sam Devlin, of Apollo Auctions, opened bidding on the coach house that was built for just £1715 in the 1880s.
Bidding started at $1 million and slowly crept up to $1.125 million before a vendor bid at $1.15 million stalled the auction.
After about 20 minutes of negotiations, Mr Lagerroth raised his bid to $1.155 million.
When the pair were announced the new owners they embraced in a kiss while the crowd applauded.
Dressed in a tuxedo, Mr Lagerroth said they were pleased with their purchase and were willing to pay a fair price.
“To find something this raw and this special, I’m over the moon,” Mr Lagerroth said.
“When you’re the top bid you always hope they (the sellers) will negotiate with you.
“That was my strategy – not to get out of hand but I wanted to pay a fair price.”
The dilapidated house, on one of the Teneriffe’s best streets will need a bit of love to restore it to its former glory.
“I love the position and I love the elegance and proximity to everything,” he said.
“We will renovate and add to it and make something maybe a little bit of old and new,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to spending time together working through what we can do with the property.”
Ms Depasquale said they would live in the property and had no plans to develop the site.
The pair said they would return to their friend’s wedding reception after the auction with a great story to share.
The property was taken to auction by Belle Property New Farm principal Ivo Kornel who said 100 groups inspected the home during the four-week marketing campaign.
“I always knew we were going to sell it and we went through the process and got the job done,” Mr Kornel said.
“I thought Craig might be sweating a bit more wearing a full tux and before the auction started I said to them wouldn’t it be funny if you buy it.
“It went to a really good home.”
Meanwhile, Place Sunnybank agents Owen Chen and Matthew Griffin sold 16 Genoa St, Macgregor under the hammer for $724,000.
Five registered bidders placed 12 bids between them before the home sold to a local family.
On the Sunshine Coast a four-bedroom beachfront home at 195 Oceanic Drive, Warana was snapped up for $1.005 million by a local buyer who lived around the corner.
In Townsville, and a five-bedroom Queenslander at 31 Sheehan St, Belgian Gardens sold for $505,000 to a local family with four children.
